Karen Baks
(Jensen) spent time in Tainan as
a youngster in the late 1950s and sent us some thoughts from those
days.
She made
reference to "Tom" in her subject line. She was probably
referring to a Tainan
story from Tom Roberts.
Good
memories Tom!
Thank you for
posting this Taiwan Air Station blog. It brings back such happy memories
as we lived in Tainan
from 1958 through late 1960 while our Dad, Major Niels Jensen, guided those
Taiwanese mechanics with repairing and keeping the planes flying.
We
"kids" enjoyed swimming (from April thru November) at the MAAG beach
and playing in the pillboxes at either end. We danced in the little canteen.
My Dad said
the Magambo club was named for Clark Gable film, Mogambo - just mis-spelled.
There was a
bowling alley, a teen club and a movie theater at the Air Station, plus Spring
Rolls at the CAT Club swimming pool. Same teen fun as the stateside kids,
but a very small group.
Our family
traveled down to Eluanbi for snorkeling, and across the East/West Highway to Hualien - the
swinging bridge across Taroko Gorge was scary good fun! And we vacationed twice
at the Sun Moon Lake
hotel - rowing out to a tiny island in the lake, which now holds a sacred
shrine.
Here's
military PR, but good info on our father's workload:
