Kids and School at MAAG Hsinchu 1950's

Have you even seen a more happy group of youngsters walking to school?
.
By the looks on their faces you would think that these children were watching some type of entertainment, making them laugh. No, it was Roy Rayle, who had stopped his Jeep and walked across the street to take this photograph.
.
Life is some times hard, but these kids had a joyful spirit and happy hearts.
.
Today, we explore the kids of MAAG Hsinchu and the school they attended.

And You Thought, You Moved Around Too Much

I received this envelope from Jim Nelson. Jim's large collection of photographs of aircraft and buildings on Tainan AB and the surrounding area were recently posted to this blog.
.
I guess you could say the Army and Air Force Postal Service did their job.
.
Jim received his mail, but had it not found him when it did, I wonder what would have happened had he moved on to other bases? Do one of you postal folks remember the procedures when an envelope had no space for a forwarding address?
.
Interesting piece of history. Jim's job with his SCARWAF unit took him to many short assignments in Japan, Korea and Taiwan during his tour in the Far East in the late 1950's.

1958 Construction Brought Change to Tainan AB

Jim Nelson continues with photographs of the many new buildings and infrastructure projects his unit was involved with during 1958.

I have looked at Google Earth a number of times and cannot find any of these 1958 buildings still standing. However, they could have been remodeled some time during the past 50 years and some may still be in use.

Click here to move to the Taipei Air Station Web Site and Jim Nelson's construction photos.

Taipei in the 1950's when the bicycle was the main means of transportation.

MAAG Hsinchu as seen through the camera lens of Roy Rayle during his Hsinchu assignment in the late 1950's.

In our previous post on Hsinchu Housing, we saw how families lived their lives in the confines of the Bank of Taiwan (BOT) Housing area.

This week we explore some venues of Entertainment Hsinchu military folks enjoyed when time permitted.
