Where are we?

Is this the same area as the photograph below? This photo taken November 2007

Photo courtesy of Milt Doyle - circa 1971-1972
.

Who can ID the location of this photograph? There are a number of hints in the photograph.

I think I know, what do you say?

I don't know if this is Chong San Pei Leu (main drag) - but it looks like it - especially with the JAL sign on the left.

I'm glad Milt Doyle is sending in photos; I remember him from TAS Post Office, complete with the leather jacket with fringe! I sure hope he has photos of TAS, especially the Post Office, O-Club, Pool, Club areas....

Best Regards

John Hurst

Chung Shan Bei Lu heading north over the bridge. The bridge is no more.

This was Fu-Hsing Bridge. This bridge built over railroad that across Chong San Pei Leu. After the railroad built underground, the bridge was no more.

These 2 pics are about 3 blocks away from each other, and shot at different directions.

The first one in 2007 was at the intersection of Chong-Hiao Si Leu and Chong San Nan Leu facing east on Chong Hsiao Si Leu.

The old picture was near the Chang-an Dong Leu facing north on Chung San Pei Leu.

This area has changed dramatically in the past 10-20 years.

Previous respondents are right. The underground pass in the new photo is leading to east, where you can see Taipei 101 in a clear day, and the bridge, Fu-Hsing Bridge, in the old one was heading north, which was built in 1955 for Chiang Kai-Shek's motorcade, in consideration that he might be attacked when he was stopped in from of a railway level cross, during the way of commuting between the presidential office and his residence in Shilin. Until the end of 1980, the bridge and the underground pass (built later, still there as we see now) had consituted an overhead pass for downtown Taipei and a part of the memory of old Taipei citizens (including you, Sir?)

The older picture is taken from a taxi. I saw the taxi meter, it's long long time ago.
