This photograph takes in most of the immediate area many of us were familiar with. It was taken from the revolving restaurant just a few buildings south of Min Quan Road..
There is a photograph some where on the Linkou website that shows the restaurant building. The photo shows a couple of men crossing Chan Shan North Road. Can anyone provide a link to that photo?
Most of the shops and stores catered to the military folks and, if it was made in Taiwan, you could purchase it in one of these establishments.
These photographs, taken in 1969, were sent by John Crum, who worked at STRATCOM.
He and his wife spent a year in Taiwan. Their home was less that a mile from the facilities on Grass/Gold Mountain.
Here's a familiar shop.
I purchased pair of brass and green marble lamps here. I believe the lamps are still boxed up (in pieces) awaiting repair in my garage.

The first picture looks like the intersection of Chung Shan Bei LU and Ming-Chuan Dung Lu near the North West Orient Airline office. Across the street you can see the corner where the beautiful Majestic Hotel is in the process of starting to be built.

I saw the before and save it in my hard drive. Sorry I don't remember the link.
These two men seemed walking toward the King's Hotel, not a restaurant.
Is this the same place? https://maps.google.com/maps?oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&channel=sb&q=Taipei+map&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x3442ac6b61dbbd9d:0xc0c243da98cba64b,Taipei+City,+Taiwan&gl=us&ei=gLl8U4e5IermsASBwYHoCw&ved=0CCcQ8gEwAA .
I'm trying to find the 'Uh Mei' restaurant, but I'm not sure it was on Chung San Bei Lu. I was there in 1974 August. In searching on Google, I came across this link. If you double-click the 'B' enough, you'll get the street view, but it's not very good. Mackay Memorial is above left, and the restaurant is off-road, but between section 1 and 2.
